Aquatics Life Support Maintenance Lead

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Oregon Zoo is hiring an Aquatic Life Support Maintenance Lead. This position serves in a lead capacity and performs Life Support Systems (LSS) duties.  Work performed by this position also includes new employee orientation, training for new and existing staff, provides direction on standard operating procedures, develops and writes preventative maintenance (PM) standards for equipment, assigns and oversees work of other LSS staff, follows up on PM assignments, develops schedules to plan project and PM work and provides input to the Preventative Maintenance Manager regarding hiring and performance evaluation; may participate in the screening and interview process.


The Life Support Team (LSS) is looking for new ways to conserve water and electricity by upgrading equipment and changing operational practices. The LSS team is responsible for the operation a number of fresh and salt water systems that support marine mammals, elephants, cats, beaver/otters and a collection of fish and invertebrates. The position will work closely with the Living Collections team to offer the highest level of care to our animals.

Pay range for Maintenance Lead: Entry rate: $32.02; 6 months; $33.90; 18 months: $35.89; 30 months: $38.01; 42 months: $40.24/hour

Work area: Oregon Zoo – Facilities
Work Week: Monday – Friday

Shift: The initial shift for this position will be 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Please note, this shift may be subject to change based on the business needs of the department, and subject to the terms of Section 10 of the LIUNA Local 483 collective bargaining agreement.

Owned and operated by Metro Regional Government, the Oregon Zoo has an annual attendance of over 1.6 million visitors. The zoo is located along the MAX light rail line, just minutes from downtown Portland, is highly regarded nationally, regionally and locally. The Oregon Zoo is home to over 2,000 animals representing 279 species of amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates and mammals.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years of LSS experience preferably in a Zoo or a large aquarium, and 
  • AALSO Level 1 certification.
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job duties and responsibilities
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid driver’s license and First Aid/CPR Certification, forklift trainer and operator certifications, and to obtain within six months and maintain such other certifications and licenses as may be required
  • A BA or BS degree in Biology or Chemistry and an AALSO II certification is preferred.
