Custodian (Part-Time)

This position works independently and as part of a crew to maintain Zoo grounds and buildings in an attractive, healthy, and safe manner. Work involves a variety of janitorial and maintenance tasks, and also involves interacting with Zoo guests in a positive, professional manner.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs custodial duties throughout Zoo grounds including sweeping, mopping, trash collection, window washing, dusting and floor maintenance.
  • Cleans and sanitizes Zoo restrooms as scheduled throughout the day, ensuring an excellent guest experience when using Zoo facilities.
  • Makes minor repairs to toilet flush valves, water faucets and related equipment or systems.
  • Reports major repair needs to the Facilities Manager in a timely manner.
  • Works effectively with contracted services, setting an excellent example of the zoo’s mission and vision, and reporting any issues to the Facilities Manager.
  • Promptly addresses high priority custodial needs in a professional manner, always providing excellent guest service.
  • Interacts with zoo guests in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Plans for efficient completion of daily duties, ensuring supplies and equipment are readily accessible for tasks and projects. Informs Lead Custodian or Facilities Manager when supplies are low, or equipment needs to be replaced.
  • Effectively performs special assignments and projects as requested, and assists with other shifts as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  • Minimum one year experience in a janitorial position or related field. Experience in construction trades desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety rules, regulations in janitorial and maintenance work.
  • Valid California driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Good verbal English communication skills required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

  • This position is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch, and kneel; use hands and arms for operation of janitorial and maintenance tools and equipment.
  • The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
  • Visual acuity to operate machinery and read printed instructions and safety information, and to assess the thoroughness of the work assigned. Color perception is also required.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.

Work Environment:

  • The position primarily functions outdoors, with exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to hazardous chemicals, fumes from equipment operation, and dust/dirt from Zoo grounds.
  • The position works in close proximity to Zoo animals.
  • Occasional local travel may be required.
