Director of Facilities Operations

Essential Job Functions:

This position is responsible for the leadership, management and oversight of the Facilities and Custodial Departments of Zoo New England in a way that ensures a healthy, positive work environment. This position is also responsible to provide support to the Chief Operating Officer in the development, planning, and implementation of capital projects and planning. It also includes creation and oversight of preventative maintenance programs for systems, buildings, exhibits and vehicles. Also included are building asset management, capital equipment acquisition, and emergency preparedness. Duties include the supervision, development, implementation and ongoing management of the Facilities and Custodial Departments, including budget creation and management, staffing and scheduling. This position will place a high priority on best practices as pertains to efficiency and sustainability in keeping with the zoo’s mission and strategic goals. This position is expected to be available 24/7 for emergencies and may include weekends and holidays. The Director of Facilities participates collaboratively with other departments for the attainment of Zoo New England’s strategic goals and mission.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises / manages human and financial resources, associated with the operation of the Facilities and Custodial Departments, and coordinates activities with all zoo departments.
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Facilities and Custodial Departments including, but not limited to:
    • Implementing, supporting, and enforcement “Green” and sustainable practices and policies in both departments
    • Implementing and monitoring preventive maintenance programs
    • Development and oversight of departmental budgets
    • With the COO, develops and implements capital and deferred maintenance plans and budgets
    • Analyzing and timely reporting and interpretation of appropriate financial information
    • Preparing and maintaining thorough records
    • Facilitating  and fostering staff development
    • Communicating with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and legislative requirements.
  • Develops and oversees near and long term plans supporting facility operations
  • Ensure compliance with city, state and federal regulations, including licensing and inspection requirements governing building operations, construction, and modifications.
  • Ensure that Facilities and Custodial staff are properly trained in their roles and response to emergency situations.
  • With the COO, responsible for developing design, scope, retaining professional services, and construction of exhibit and other capital asset development.
  • Establishes and implements departmental and staff performance goals that support the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
  • This position is expected to share on-call duties and be willing to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Participates and instructs in Dangerous Animal Response Protocols and procedures and the Incident Command System.
  • Ensures staff and contractors are following all SOP’s, safety protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ensures all contractors comply with ZNE’s Contractor Code of Conduct
  • Fosters and ensures positive staff interactions with guests in support of ZNE’s strategic plan.
  • Responsible for quality control on all ZNE projects both self-performed and contracted
  • Provides input, assistance, and oversees personnel matters within the department. Ensures all departmental staff management is in conducted in compliance with all legal/regulatory requirements and all ZNE policies and procedures

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure and close contact with a variety of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects.
  • Frequently need to bend, stoop, kneel, reach and lift.
  • Frequent requirements to move moderate to heavy objects.
  • Work in uneven terrain with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, and allergens.
  • Move about on slippery surfaces.
  • Handle toxic and/or hazardous materials.
  • Work in confined or cramped spaces.
  • May work from an elevated position.
  • Must be willing and able to take lead role as supervisor during emergencies; and cope with high stress situations, e.g., the capture of escaped animals or emergency assistance to guests as directed

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • High school diploma, preferably from a technical / vocational curriculum.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in facilities, construction, or Zoo Operations.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and safety-related systems and components.
  • Possess strong leadership skills and a proven ability to develop, maintain and build staff talent and cross organizational relationships.
  • Familiarity working within building management systems, such as Building Engines and Fleetio
  • Ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively under pressure. Detail and deadline oriented.
  • Ability to supervise and work with a diverse population, internally and externally.
  • Must be able to provide clear direction, communication and sound judgment in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to function collegiality in a team environment, apply sound management principles, tact, reasoning, prioritization and time management.
  • Actively support Zoo New England’s mission and strategic goals and have the ability to effectively represent the institution to other constituencies.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Lives within 25 miles of Franklin Park Zoo

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering.
  • Extensive and varied construction, facilities management, or related project experience.
  • Extensive experience with development of zoological exhibit and related capital project management principals.
