Director of Facilities

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is seeking a Director of Facilities to provide oversight of Building and Grounds Maintenance, Building Engineering, Horticulture Operations, Custodial Operations, Rides Maintenance, Safety Support Functions, Event Support, and Sustainability Operations.  This person will be responsible for the processes and systems related to the daily operations of the identified Facilities Departments.  As the senior leader in the Facilities Department, this person will provide guidance to staff and work in concert with all other departments to ensure completion of duties as assigned. This position reports directly to Senior Vice President Operations/COO

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • As a member of senior staff this position will oversee safe, efficient and effective delivery of all daily activities associated with the reporting departments and functions as indicated above.
  • Preparation and management of departmental budgets. Analyze statistical and financial data.
  • Complete detailed plans and cost estimates for defined activities to maintain cost parameters within approved budgetary constraints.
  • Track and manage maintenance and facilities work projects through regular assessment. This includes the ability to effectively prioritize work for both operational and capital repairs.
  • Attain working knowledge of CMMS work order system and train necessary staff members in its use.
  • Prepare “Request for Proposal” with bid specifications for contracts involving construction, equipment and facility maintenance. Scheduling and supervision of all vendor related business is required.
  • Provides oversight to processes for small project construction and the remodel of existing facilities. Coordination and assistance with larger projects may be coordinated through VP of Capital Projects
  • Effectively train, manage and evaluate staff work assignments including application of policies and procedures with a safety-first priority
  • Must become familiar with zoo handbook and standards; Utilization of these standards with regards to effective coaching and counseling is required.
  • Cultivate a culture that maintains a productive, effective, diversified, respectful and knowledgeable work force through goal setting, recruitment and professional development.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and must be available as assigned during emergency situations and conditions.
  • Serves as the primary contact for the development and implementation of Zoo sustainability projects
  • Assists the COO in strategic planning for the Facilities department
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Building and Grounds Maintenance, Rides Maintenance, Fleet and Maintenance Shop Supervision, and Waste Collection and Removal, Horticulture Operations, Custodial Operations, Safety Support, Event Support and Sustainability Functions.
  • Direct reports include, Facilities Operations Manager, Facilities Contracts and Special Projects Manager, Horticulture Curator, Road Foreman, Safety Coordinator, and Clerical Assistant.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Five years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Prior Director or Senior Manager level experience required with the demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate subordinates
  • Individual must be OSHA 10 and 30 certified
  • A process thinker seeking productivity and exceptional service
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage priorities and workflow
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with subordinates, peers, and superiors
  • Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions

  • Advanced computer skills on Microsoft Office with an emphasis in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and odd hours as needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Job requires individual to be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • This position will work in both an office environment and outside
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions
