HVAC Mechanic

The HVAC Mechanic installs, maintains, and repairs commercial heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment/systems. This position maintains the proper operations, temperatures, and safety of commercial HVAC equipment/systems.

Essential Job Functions
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
• Inspect, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment/systems.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain a variety of commercial food service/restaurant equipment, including refrigerators, freezers, deep fat fryers, ice cream machines, icemakers, and other specialized equipment.
• Order parts and supplies needed for maintenance/repair work.
• Schedule replacement and repair work, with subcontractors.
• Maintain storage room of parts, tools, materials, and equipment.
Non-Essential Job Functions
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s) for Position
An employee in this class must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities upon application:

Knowledge
• Procedures and practices for the installation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of commercial heating and air-conditioning equipment/systems, including boilers, and chillers.
• Procedures and practices for the maintenance and repair of a variety of food service/restaurant equipment.
• Local, State, and Federal regulations/standards regarding the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment/systems.
• Safety procedures and practices associated with HVAC maintenance work.
• Operation of a variety of computer software, including word processing applications.
• Policies and procedures of the Oklahoma City Zoological Park and assigned department (to be acquired within 60 days of hire).

Skills
• Troubleshooting problems, installing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
• Troubleshooting problems and maintaining food service/restaurant equipment, including low temp walk ins and reach ins.
• Reading plans, blueprints, and technical drawings.
• Understanding and following complex instructions and directions.
• Strong sensory skills, such as eyesight, hearing, balance, and dexterity.

Abilities
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, outside contractors, vendors, City inspectors and officials, and the public.
• Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Working in an environment subject to constant interruptions and quickly changing priorities.
• Practice safe work methods, identifying work place hazards, and using appropriate safety equipment.
• Driving around the Oklahoma City area throughout the year.
• Work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations such as dictated by weather.

Physical Demands
• Required to walk, sit and stand for periods of time.
• Push, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Bend, stoop, kneel, and move intermittently throughout the day.
• May be exposed to fumes, odors, dust, moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
• Exposure to extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, snow and ice.
• Exposure to potentially dangerous animals.

Experience Required: Experience equivalent to six (6) years commercial level work installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air‐conditioning systems and refrigeration systems and completion of a vocational/trade school course or recognized apprenticeship program in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
Minimum Education Requirements: High School diploma or G.E.D.
Department: Maintenance Services.
Direct Supervisor: Manager Maintenance.
Supervisory Responsibility: Direct (0); Indirect (0)
Primary Work Location: Zoo Setting both indoors and outdoors.
Certification: Valid Oklahoma driver’s license and pass a driver’s history check. Commercial Unlimited Mechanical (Contractor) licenses from the State of Oklahoma and the City of Oklahoma City in Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Gas Fitting and be EPA 1 and 2 or EPA 3 (Universal) certified within sixty (60) days. Must obtain Boiler Operator license within six (6) months of hire. Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, a physical examination, and a drug test.
*Salary: $18.15/hour
*Pay will be commensurate with relevant experience.
