Integrated Pest Management Specialist

Under general supervision, this position will develop, coordinate, and implement a pest control program that includes
application of pest control substances/insecticides, trapping and removing targeted species including rodents, opossums,
foxes, feral cats, invasive birds, insects and other non-collection animals.

Essential Functions:
• Maintain inventory of pest control products and ensure use of only approved products in approved areas to
safeguard the health of collection animals.
• Adheres to all local, state, and federal guidelines for the use of pest control products.
• Coordinate with veterinarians, curators, area managers, and contractors to safely and effectively monitor and
control pests in animal, staff and guest areas.
• Pest proofing, debris removal and documentation of activities will be required.
• Maintain California State Pesticide Applicator Certification.
• Maintain records of all pest sightings by zoo staff and guests
• Coordinate and implement all pest control activities at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo including setting all traps, bait
stations, insecticides etc.
• Maintain SDS sheets and safety logs of all chemicals used.
• Responsible for the appropriate disposition of any non-collection animals deemed as pest species in an approved,
humane, and legal manner.
• Ensures appropriate storage and disposition of pesticides and pesticide-contaminated equipment by AZA, OSHA,
EPA and USDA standards.
• Effectively communicates with zoo and contracted staff ensuring that communication flows effectively.
• Flexible scheduling may be required.
• Performs special assignments and projects as requested.
• Assumes other responsibilities to ensure achievement of established objectives.
• Provides assistance in zoo signal response as appropriate.
• Completing licensing continuing education as required.
• Air rifle use for controlling some species.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:
• California state Pesticide Applicator Certification, or eligibility for certification
• Minimum 3 years’ experience as a pest control specialist
• Associates Degree or equivalent in a related field, preferred
• Experience working in a zoo or wildlife facility, preferred
• Experience developing a successful pest control program for commercial application
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime when needed
• Must be able to work outside in inclement weather conditions
• Able to perform at a competent level under high stress conditions
• Understand zoonotic disease risks and practice safe handling procedures when working with FCZ’s animal
collection, wildlife, or pest species
• CPR certification, preferred
• Knowledge of pest control standards and AVMA and AAZV humane euthanasia guidelines, preferred
• Must receive rabies immunizations and/or titers and be TB tested according to FCZ policy
• Valid CA driver’s license with good driving record.

Physical Requirements:

• This position is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch, and kneel; use hands and arms for care of animals and
cleaning of enclosures. Occasionally required to climb stairs or ladders.
• The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
• Evaluating animal health, diet, or environment requires hearing and smell.
• Visual acuity to read printed instructions and safety information, and to assess animal behavior. Color perception
is also required.
• Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal
speaking levels with or without correction.

Work Environment:
• The position functions both indoors and outdoors, with potential exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather.
• The employee is regularly exposed to a variety of animals with risk of animal bites, zoonotic disease, and other
animal-related injury.
• The employee may be required to work at heights.
• Occasional local travel may be required.
