Life Support Systems Technician

The Life Support Systems Technician manages, maintains, repairs, designs, and installs water support systems for aquatic/animal exhibits and Zoo water features. This includes working with staff in daily operations, coordinating with Animal Care to complete tasks and to meet designated water quality parameters. Assures accurate communication with vendors for product and material ordering, coordinating work with independent contractors and being involved in all aspects of new and/or rehabilitation of exhibits, as it pertains to life support systems and water features.

 

Essential functions:

1. Monitors, records and maintains LSS logs of day to day operations of life support systems for aquatic and animal exhibits, water features, and automated control systems. Establishes procedures and practices for inspection, maintenance/repair of equipment.
2. Inspects daily and provides preventative maintenance.
3. Provides a consistent flow of communications to assure a clear understanding of maintenance requirements and issues, establishing positive teamwork and problem resolution.
4. Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance schedule log or database of repairs and replaces/rebuilds equipment as needed; tests and assists with all water issues for existing and future systems, except hot water and boiler loops.
5. Coordinates and collaborates on life support systems and parameters with Zoological Programs division.
6. Assists with special events, activities, and seasonal exhibits within the Zoo through communicating and coordinating in preparation and servicing of scheduled events, as assigned by manager.
7. Participates in long‑term and short‑term planning and, as assigned, Park District wide. Communicates, exchanges information and provides constructive input concerning building cleaning and grounds maintenance, as related to the LSS functions.
8. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other professionals and the public concerning Zoo activities, programs, projects, and other related Zoo business.
9. Maintains, repairs, and/or replaces life support pumps and filtration systems as needed.

Other functions:

1. Remains current through professional development, i.e. attends relevant conferences, seminars, and certification/license programs.
2. Develops, coordinates and implements safety related matters for assigned area(s) and personnel, such as staff training, and policy and procedure enforcement. Carries out job duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner.
3. Supports Cleveland Metroparks’ policy of non‑discrimination of employees in the work place on the basis of race, age, sex, religion or disability; maintains a workplace free of harassment.
4. Performs related duties as apparent or assigned.

 

Equipment Used (Not limited to):

• Personal Computer and Microsoft Office software, automated water quality systems.
• Knowledge of spectrophotometers (e.g. HACH) and multi-probe mini-sonde (e.g. hydro lab, YSI) preferred
• Digital meters, gauges, timing controls, various plumbing and threading tools and associated hand tools.
• Power tools, forklift, and backhoe.

 

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Biology, Chemistry or equivalent preferred.
• Minimum of five years related experience in life support systems; preferred in an aquarium/zoo environment.
• Minimum one year practical lab experience operating water quality analytical equipment used to test fresh and salt water.
• Confined Space Certification, or related technical certificates.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the safe and proper operation and maintenance of biological, mechanical, and chemical aquatic/animal life support water filtration systems, such as: ozone generation equipment, building/temperature control systems, biological filters, rapid sand filters and the ability to trouble shoot these types of specialized systems.
• Skilled in LSS plumbing, minor electrical, fiberglass repair, and light carpentry preferred.
• Demonstrated applied knowledge of pool maintenance and water sanitation methods and techniques, including skill in disinfecting plant facilities, filtering, back-washing and alkalizing required.
• Valid Ohio driver’s license.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis.
• Demonstrated communication, orally and in writing. Vision minded, problem solving, strategic planning, prioritizing, delegating and the ability to analyze diverse facts, and develop clear concise reports/recommendations.
• Ability to work a flexible shift to cover and on occasion flex schedule to meet other night time related activities. Attend regular scheduled meetings each month during day time shift.

Work Days: Varies, may be required to work weekends and holidays
