Life Support Systems Technician

Working under the direction of the Facilities Manager, this position will be responsible for maintaining and repairing components of the aquatic features in both animal exhibits and non-animal areas of the zoo.

DUTIES

Maintain, operate, trouble-shoot, and repair life support and pump systems.  Responsible for monitoring overall operational efficiency of all systems.  Systems include pumps, chillers, UV sterilization, filtration, and actuators.  Equipment soon to be added include ozone generation equipment, non-potable water supply (lake sourced) and geothermal heating.

Lead, teach or direct life support operators in trouble-shooting, maintenance and operation of life support systems

Schedule and perform preventive maintenance on all equipment

Document and keep record on all maintenance, repairs and adjustments to the equipment and settings.

Regularly clean and calibrate ORP monitors

Understand how various equipment affects the water quality so recommendations can be made to animal staff and adjustments can be made per their request.

Maintain all systems to maximum efficiency to promote water conservation.

Perform routine maintenance functions throughout the zoo as needed.

Work with other member of the zoo staff, including other maintenance employees and animal staff, and with outside contractors and suppliers.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

High School diploma or GED required

Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree, either college or technical school, in a related area such as Plant Operations, Water Treatment or HVAC Operations is preferred

A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in operating and maintaining Building Automation Systems and aquatic life support system and their associated pumps, filtration and controls is required

Excellent verbal and written communication and record keeping skills are required and have basic computer skills.

Must have a valid driver’s license to operate zoo vehicles.

Must have a working knowledge of building codes associated with life support systems (plumbing, electrical…) and be able to read and understand blue prints, mechanical drawings and schematics.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Able to remain on feet for long periods and be able to traverse zoo grounds on foot

Able to lift 80 pounds

Must have full range of motion and be able to stoop, bend, lift, crawl, climb, jump, and carry objects for short distances; sit, squat and kneel for periods of time, and climb ladders and stairs.

Able to operate motorized carts

Able to perform confined space tasks

Must pass a physical examination and drug test

WORKING CONDITIONS

Duties will include working in both indoor conditioned and non-conditioned spaces as well as outside.  Exposure may include inclement weather, dust and extreme temperatures.  May include occasional exposure to possibly hazardous working conditions including proximity to dangerous animals, chemicals, and poisonous plants.

SALARY

This is a full time position with a starting hourly wage of $20.48 + benefits
