Welder

SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Supervisor of Special Construction & Welding, the Welder will repair, design, and fabricate structures, equipment, and displays using various welding techniques throughout the Saint Louis Zoo.  As an active member of Facilities Management, this position will support the Zoo’s mission and advocate the Zoo’s core values and three keys.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following reflects Management’s definition of essential functions for this position but does not restrict additional assigned tasks.  Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position.

  • Repair, design, and fabricate structures, equipment, displays, and various other types of metal objects through the use of welders, cutters, shapers and measuring tools.
  • Operate and maintain equipment including MIG, ARC and TIG welders, drill press, plasma cutter, power tools, oxygen acetylene cutting torch, hand tools and a variety of other welding equipment.
  • Weld materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron, and others.
  • Evaluate projects and work orders to determine scope of work requirements and sequence of welding assignments.
  • Utilize the CMMS work order system for work scheduling, preventative maintenance programs, and record keeping.
  • Ensure that proper safety guidelines and usage of PPE are followed at all times.
  • Know and understand the Zoo employee handbook and adhere to all stated disciplinary actions and personnel policies.
  • Work in close collaboration with all Zoo internal departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification or undergraduate degree from a technical school, vocational school, or community college or the equivalent years of experience required.
  • Must be able to obtain AWS certifications for both 3G and 4G processes in carbon steel within six months of employment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and other technical documents.
  • Possession or the ability to obtain OSHA 10/30-Hour Training certification.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Good attendance record and work ethic.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work in a standing position during a regular 8-hour shift.
  • Must be able to push, pull, bend, squat, stoop, climb stairs or ladders, and twist many times a day.
  • Must be able to safely lift, carry and load 75 pounds.
  • Physical capacity to endure exposure to inclement weather, dust, heavy machinery, restraint devices and hazardous chemicals. Use of proper PPE may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position will work in both a production environment and outside. Significant exposure to weather is possible.
