Zoo Facilities Maintenance Specialist

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for a Zoo Facilities Maintenance Specialist. This
position performs a variety of semi skilled and skilled duties related to the construction, repair and
maintenance of zoo grounds and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Oversees day-to-day facilities and environmental maintenance operations and projects; oversees
in-house zoo construction projects, interacts as necessary with city departments, contractors and
architect in completing repair, maintenance, and new construction. Schedules building
maintenance, contractors and/or in-house labors to complete repairs. Plans, orders and maintains
materials used in construction projects in the zoo; develops project specifications, plans material
needs, prepares purchase orders.

Cleans and maintains zoo buildings including public restrooms, offices and equipment and tool
storage areas. Evaluates and repairs Zoo facilities and informs zoo management of repairs
needed, whether they are extensive or minor. Perform repairs and construction by utilizing a variety
of hand and power tools to ensure the safety of the animals, employees, volunteers and the public.

Maintains lawns, flowerbeds and gardens. Prunes shrubs and trees. Applies fertilizers and
pesticides as necessary. Plans and designs new sprinkler systems and animal exhibit watering
features. Maintains irrigation systems including water filters and pumps.

Maintains appropriate records including but not limited to repair of buildings, scheduling of
preventative maintenance of building HVAC systems, scheduling of maintenance for vehicles and
equipment, scheduling of fertilizer application.

Responsible for snow removal from paths, walls, drive areas, parking areas and service areas as
needed.

Maintains and orders inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment necessary for the cleaning of
zoo buildings, exhibits and grounds.

Trains zoo personnel and volunteers in the safe and proper use of equipment and chemicals used
throughout the zoo. Assures that all chemicals are stored properly. Maintains and updates as
necessary MSDS reference books.

Observes public to ensure that safety regulations are adhered to.

Prepares zoo facilities for special events or promotions.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from standard senior high school or equivalent;
AND
B. Four (4) years of experience in construction, maintenance, and upkeep of buildings and
grounds;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the operation of common hand and power tools; working knowledge of the
operation of light equipment such as lawn mower, weed whip, tractor, front end loader; some
knowledge of the care and maintenance of a variety of plants; working knowledge of preventative
maintenance of buildings and equipment.

Working skill in carpentry, plumbing or other construction field; skill in the use of a variety of hand
tools, power tools and equipment such as paint sprayers, dump truck, power lifts, ladders, loaders,
hammers, saws, wrenches, sanders, and other tools common to building maintenance and repair,
including HVAC, carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

Ability to determine needs for services and supplies necessary to carry out the task; lift and carry
moderately heavy loads; operate grounds equipment and power tools; establish and follow through
on work priorities; make quality decisions in emergencies; understand and follow routine verbal or
written instruction; ability to learn quickly and adapt to unique requirements of the position; ability to
perform strenuous physical labor; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability
to develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees the public and
volunteers.

3. Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Idaho State Driver’s License.
Must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
Maintain First Aid and CPR Certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Tasks require a variety of physical activities generally involving muscular strain. Physical demands
may occur in activities related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking,
hearing and seeing required in the daily performance of job duties. Exposure to weather,
environmental hazards and dangers resulting from working around dangerous animals and
equipment. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating
thinking and creative problem solving.
