Aquatic Life Support Technician – Full Time

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is announcing the opening of an Aquatic Life Support Technician.  This position is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, repair and monitoring of all aspects of life support and mechanical systems of the Zoo’s water exhibits.  Work involves conducting water tests and analysis, preventive maintenance, along with reading plans and blueprints.  Responsibilities will include support of related equipment used for diving and responding to mechanical problems arising during dives.  The specialist will communicate with Animal Care staff regarding pertinent information relating to life support systems.  This is a full-time hourly position, reporting to the Life Support Supervisor.  Must be on call for emergencies and may work varied shifts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILILTIES:

  • Conducts repairs on all life-support and facility mechanical systems, including, but not limited to: fresh and salt-water pumps, filters, heat exchangers, valves, pressure regulators  and automation equipment, low-voltage systems, building hardware, plumbing and other duties as deemed necessary to maintain facility operations.
  • Maintain proper water quality using sanitizers, ozone and other chemicals
  • Maintain water chemistry, including salinity, PH levels and other parameters
  • Maintain proper water filtration for turbidity/clarity
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records.
  • Performs various troubleshooting techniques related to system problems and/or malfunctions
  • Assists in maintaining clean work environments
  • Ensure safety procedure and policies are followed.
  • Assists in the design of new filtration systems
  • Assists Supervisor in ordering and stocking of all necessary chemicals, equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate communications with Animal Care Supervisors and staff as to water and pool conditions.
  • Support other related equipment used for dives.
  • Respond to emergencies
  • Assist with monitoring expenses and budgets
  • May be required to help with snow and ice operations
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Four years paid full time or part time equivalent experience in water treatment, mechanical maintenance or laboratory work; or a degree from an accredited college in Biology or other natural science plus two years’ experience in mentioned areas of work.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and  to function in a team environment  with limited supervision
  • Currently hazmat certified or becomes certified within 6 months
  • Knowledge and understanding of water chemistry and water quality parameters, analysis, filtration systems etc.
  • Experience with salt and fresh water systems
  • Experience with USDA marine mammal standards related to water quality.
  • Good working  knowledge of hydraulic/pumping, automated control and filtration/disinfection systems as well as knowledge of electricity, interpreting values on machinery and gauges
  • Proven troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of water filtration systems
  • The ability to work on ones feet for extensive periods of time, in adverse conditions (e.g. cramped spaces and wet environment).
  • Must be fully capable of reading technical drawings, technical specifications and written repair/maintenance procedures with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to lift safely up to 80+ pounds
  • Ability to use application software, such as Word, Excel, MS Office, and work order management  system
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam an become dive certified with 6 months..
  • Familiarity with RCK control automation a plus
