Assistant Grounds Maintenance Manager

Objective: Supervise the daily maintenance and repair of facility operations areas; track and implement preventive maintenance work, oversee custodial and skilled labor employees. Participate in a workplace culture that values cooperation and respect, motivate staff to produce quality work, and inspire team morale.

Key tasks

  1. Daily supervision of department activities; perform daily site inspections of the facility for cleanliness, safety conditions, facility maintenance, and systems.
  2. Assess the condition of the facility
  3. Ensures availability and tracking of inventory of supplies and materials
  4. Works with manager on MPlus work order system; follow up on performance and completion of work orders.
  5. Oversee attendant schedule and supervision, coordinating with supervising attendant
  6. Order supplies and materials with approval of the manager
  7. Assist with staff attendance and payroll with administrative assistant
  8. Assist in coordinating and/or perform weekly supply runs to Bronx Zoo.
  9. Manage facility recycling program with Animal Department liaison

Competencies/Experience Areas

  1. Oversee the maintenance of building systems and structures, interior, exterior, and grounds elements
  2. Ensure and monitor compliance with codes, regulations, policies, and standards
  3. Emergency preparedness: able to support the organization’s emergency preparedness plan
  4. Assess ways to improve workplace productivity; implement improvements
  5. Implement practices that support the performance of the facility


  • NYS driver’s license required
  • Knowledge of construction trades: plumbing, electrical, carpentry. Proficiency in the safe and proper use of power equipment and tools, heavy and light machinery; tractor and similar vehicles, and building materials.
  • Ability to obtain certificates of fitness as required for facility
  • Familiarity with OSHA and safety best practices
  • Experience working in or supervising in a union environment preferred


  • Salary range: high $50K, commensurate with experience.
