Director of Facilities

PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Director of Facilities, Safari Park performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Director of Facilities, Zoo is responsible for construction, remodeling, repair, maintenance, and cleanliness of facilities, including buildings, grounds, exhibits, transportation systems, vehicles and equipment, roads, and electrical, plumbing, mechanical, drainage, wastewater treatment plant and environmental systems at the Safari Park. This position reports to the Director of Park Operations, San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manages assigned staff and coordinates contractors
  • Directs wastewater treatment plant operation
  • Inspects and evaluates facilities condition and plans corrective actions
  • Implements automated preventative maintenance systems
  • Monitors the planning, development, and construction of new projects and major remodels
  • Monitors major remodels and provides guidance as needed
  • Assures contract compliance and quality on projects
  • Develops, administers, and monitors assigned budgets
  • Maintains a variety of contacts in order to respond to inquiries and requests and effectively coordinate activities
  • Adheres to all SDZG and department policies and practices
  • Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics
  • Monitors and guides maintenance of water quality systems
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Manages assigned staff and coordinates contractors in facilities planning, constructing, remodeling, repairing, maintaining, and cleaning
  • Oversees motor pool, transportation, heavy equipment, garage, and tool room
  • Implements automated preventative maintenance systems to identify optimum timing for maintenance, refurbishment, and replacements
  • Prepares cost estimates and budgets for proposed projects
  • Prepares project plans and specifications
  • Prepares change orders for contracts
  • Oversees staffing and budgeting
  • Assures standards are being met
  • Ensure water quality standards are being met
  • Escort VIP Tours, Special Events planning
  • Prepare and implement emergency policies and planning
  • Prepare and present reports to Executive Team

ANCILLARY FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Examples of representative qualifications include considerable experience in the construction industry and supervisory and project coordination experience; a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, or a related field is desirable; coursework in civil engineering or a related field or  Architectural training or coursework are desirable; experience working with represented labor is desirable. A California general contractor’s license is desirable and California driver license is required.

Knowledge of:

  • Building trades, tools, equipment, and materials
  • Construction cost estimating
  • Facilities maintenance requirements and practices
  • Building and safety regulations
  • Basic knowledge of inventory control practices
  • Project management

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Manage assigned staff
  • Work in a fast paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Develop, administer and monitor budgets
  • Use word processing and spreadsheet systems
  • Use automated design systems is desirable
  • To prepare bid requests, specifications, and requisitions
  • To evaluate proposals
  • Understand union contracts regarding labor use restrictions
  • Work with teams and effectively with others in a diverse environment
  • Respond to emergencies

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Prolonged walking and standing, lifting; travel.

Exempt position – Salary is commensurate with experience
