Facilities Maintenance Technician – Welding and Fabrication

Salary: $25.02 – $31.81 hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Oregon Zoo is a unique environment, with multiple buildings, attractions, a veterinary hospital, animal habitats and complex technical systems. We are currently seeking an experienced facilities maintenance technician with journey-level skill in welding, fabrication and other skilled trades.

The Facilities Maintenance Technician will perform a variety of job functions in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. In this role, you will perform multi-skilled project planning, problem solving, maintenance, construction and operations functions, using your skill in mechanics, plumbing and piping, carpentry, painting, welding, fabrication, machining and concrete trades.

In addition to a strong background in facilities maintenance, we are looking for a tradesperson with journey-level skills in the following areas:

  • Welding in flat, vertical and overhead positions to perform SMAW shielded metal arc welding, MIG metal inert gas welding (steel and aluminum), and TIG tungsten inert gas welding (steel, stainless steel and other ferrous metals, and aluminum).
  • Fabricating items out of a range of materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, plastic and wood; working from shop drawings or without professional design schematics; independently developing solutions for unique problems.
  • Using an oxy-acetalyne gas cutting and heating torch as well as a plasma arc cutting torch.

Our idea candidate can think independently and develop solutions for unique problems throughout the zoo; take design ideas and fabricate them into functioning systems; and work from shop drawings as well as independent of any professional design schematics.

Pay Range: Entry rate: $25.02; 6 months: $26.59; 18 months: $28.22; 30 months: $29.95; 42 months: $31.81/hour.

Work Schedule: The anticipated schedule for this position is 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Schedules are subject to change based on the needs of the work unit.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Three years progressively responsible trade experience such as a mechanic, machinist, welder, or heavy equipment operator, with demonstrated skills including design, fabrication and assisting in project management, AND
  • Trade certified or equivalent; OR
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the position.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires a valid driver’s license with a minimum of two years of driving experience and a clean driving record.
  • Medical testing and/or immunizations may be required as the duties of this position may require close contact with animal areas and enclosures where animals may be present.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in facilities maintenance in a large, complex, multi-facility environment.
  • Journey-level skill in welding and fabrication. (See specific operations detailed above.)
  • Manual machining skills
