Facilities Manager

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Facilities Manager is responsible for oversight of all construction and remodeling as well as all repair and maintenance of facilities. This position is located in Hawaii and works directly with and in support of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Wildlife Care Teams in our Hawaii Conservation Hub. This position reports to the Associate Director of Conservation Science.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Develop and implement facility preventative maintenance program including, but not limited to, scheduling and completion of work, contracting outside vendors, ordering supplies and maintaining inventory and maintenance logs.
  • Perform maintenance including, but not limited to, construction, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, drainage, landscaping, life support monitoring systems and generator maintenance.
  • Coordinate on-site safety programs including, but not limited to, taking inventory of chemicals or other SDS compliant information, conducting monthly Safety training for staff and conducting safety inspections as needed for safety equipment (fire extinguishers, first aid kits, eye washes) ensuring compliance with state guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all utility systems are inspected and in accordance with regulations.
  • Responsible for all landscaping, recycling, garbage disposal, compost management, pest control and reporting road repairs as needed.
  • Manage all vendor contracts, negotiate bids and contracts for third party workers, oversite of vendors while working on-site.
  • Work with IACUC (Institutional Care and Use Committee) to meet all standards for inspection and inspection readiness.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is seeking an individual who is inspired to be a part of an organization that is committed to protecting critically endangered wildlife around the globe. A true construction expert, this position will work at and travel between the two bird conservation centers in Hawaii – Maui and Keauhou and would have and/or make connections with local contractors that will help meet the needs of the position.  They will work closely with staff and partners in Hawaii and San Diego to maintain and develop best-in-class facilities.  The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills, with a natural ability to simplify processes and optimize how valuable resources are used. They will be approachable, empathetic, and candid, focused on continuous improvement and always providing outstanding internal and external customer service. This position will make lasting improvements, to reduce recurring maintenance issues and ensure better suitability of facilities, identifying a number of creative solutions for issues, and influencing others to apply appropriate resources. They will be excited and motivated to use their technical expertise in a way that truly makes a difference.

  • JOB EXPERIENCE
    • Must have at least 2 years’ experience in facilities management
    • Experience working with represented labor preferred
    • Experience working or managing a campus facility preferred
  • EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
    • High School Diploma Required
    • Advanced degree and/or training in building trades preferred
    • Current valid State Driver’s License in good standing
  • SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
    • Knowledge of building trades, tools, equipment, and materials.
    • Able to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
    • Able to use moderately complex computer software programs and work order systems.
    • Able to collaborate effectively with others.
    • Knowledge of inventory control practices.
    • Able to understand union contracts regarding labor use restrictions.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform construction and maintenance tasks while adhering to local, state and federal regulations.
    • Able to operate various machinery needed for performing maintenance and landscaping duties.
