Facilities Systems Manager

Job Summary:

Lead industry-standard Aquarium electrical, plumbing, and kitchen mechanical maintenance and planning for ongoing care and reliability of multiple campus buildings, including the main Aquarium. Set priorities, manage resources and purchasing, maintain plumbing and electrical standards throughout the campus, train new staff. Supervise plumbing staff, electrical staff, and kitchen mechanical staff. Work interdepartmentally with operational teams and contractors to maintain excellent guest experience, customer service, and maintenance. Perform other duties as required in support of infrastructure, HVAC, and building system maintenance.

Core Activities:

Develop preventative maintenance and planning processes for institutional electrical, plumbing, kitchen mechanical systems, and some HVAC.

Prioritize electrical and plumbing emergency and preventative maintenance work and associated resources.

Manage purchasing, budget, contracts, and inventory of parts and materials.

Inspect facilities periodically to determine problems and necessary maintenance, communicating closely with other work groups. Supervise and mentor plumbing, electrical, and mechanical staff; conduct regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports; complete annual performance evaluations; manage staff hiring.

Oversee maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures and the preventative maintenance database, including documentation, Archibus records, facility records, institutional standards, and training documents.

Lead design and development for plumbing and electrical systems as part of projects and new builds.

Prepare regular maintenance schedules, working with the Lead Electrician, Lead Plumber, and Kitchen Mechanic.

Train staff on facility maintenance and safety protocols.

Perform hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation of plumbing and/or electrical components.

Develop budget for plumbing, electrical, and kitchen mechanical systems, working closely with the department head.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

At least 5 years of licensed plumbing, electrical, or HVAC work experience in a commercial or industrial environment

At least 3 years of experience supervising plumbing, electrical, or HVAC staff

Strong understanding of trade-specific scopes of projects, trade-related codes, and the required coordination with other trades Ability to read and follow plans, schematics, and safety procedures

Excellent communication skills, with ability to communicate clearly with and coordinate with many diverse work groups

Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage contractors, and mentor staff

Ability to anticipate needs, prioritize responsibilities, manage multiple priorities

Experience working in and leading work in a safe manner compliant with the California Plumbing Code, California Electrical Code, NFPA, UPC, Am Water, AWWA standards, and CalOSHA

Demonstrated commitment to safety standards and associated regulations

Experience with elevated work, work over water, and work in a confined space

Experience working in or around an environment that involves live animals and/or the public

Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Core Values

Must possess, or be able to obtain within the first 3 months of employment, a valid California driver’s license in order to operate Monterey Bay Aquarium vehicles

Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Annual Compensation Range:

$91,200 USD-$116,000 annually. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
