Grounds Keeper and Landscaper

This position performs a variety of duties required to maintain the appearance and cleanliness of Utah’s Hogle Zoo, including grounds, shrubs and planting beds, equipment including mowing, aerating and weeding planting beds, turf, and tree/shrub maintenance, picking up trash, raking leaves, clearing pathways and removing debris.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports directly to the Grounds and Horticulture Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs trash and debris removal from the pathways designated trash and recycle containers.
  2. Performs irrigation system maintenance and repairs, and clock management.
  3. Performs flower beds maintenance, and weeding to keep planting areas well maintained.
  4. Performs tree care, and pruning, and fall leaf removal.
  5. Performs snow and ice removal using a shovel, blower other equipment.
  6. Operate various types of handheld and light mechanical equipment including mowers, sweepers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment to complete assigned tasks.
  7. Support Zoo events by moving and locating needed table chairs and picnic tables for scheduled event set up.
  8. Commitment to the zoo’s mission and conservation efforts.
  9. Ability to work overtime as needed.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience
Must be 18 years or older.  With a High School Degree or GED equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
This list contains knowledge, skills, and abilities that are typically associated with the job. It is not all-inclusive and may vary from position to position.

  • Able to work variable shifts with weekends and holidays required.

Possession of a valid Driver’s License or driving privilege card.

  • Experience in software applications with the ability to receive tasks and track time in a work order system.
  • State of Utah Pesticide License, or able to obtain one within one year:

Required technical skills include the knowledge and ability of:

  • Microsoft Office Suite.

Required mathematical skills include working knowledge of:

  • Performs basic mathematical formulas and calculations.

Required grounds skills:

  • Ability to operate small hand tools and small gasoline-operated equipment in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor both indoors and outdoors for an extended period of time, including during inclement weather.
  • Operate various types of handheld and light mechanical equipment including mowers, sweepers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment.

Must possess excellent communications skills:

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Tasks require a variety of moderately heavy physical activities which generally involve muscular strain. Requires activities related to walking, standing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Exposure to spraying of insecticides and herbicides, spreading fertilizers, cleaning, and sanitation chemicals heat, cold, noise, dust, and fumes. Requires lifting of up to 50 lbs.
