Horticulture Aide – Permanent Part-Time

Reporting to the Facility Director, the Horticulture Aide will assist the Horticulturist in care and exhibition of temperate and tropical plants in park areas, buildings, greenhouses, and other exhibition areas. The Horticulture Aide will also occasionally provide semi-skilled labor required for the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of park facilities, including buildings, fixtures and furnishings, grounds, walkways, and parking lots.

This position has a wage range of $14.49 – $17.05 per hour based on experience.
PART TIME HOURS
This position would ideally work Sunday – Thursday from 7am – 1pm.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Horticultural, Grounds, Greenhouse, and/or Landscaping background, or equivalent combination of education and experience
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs basic horticulture functions of pruning, planting, weeding, mulching, trimming, mowing, and general landscape cleanup
- Operates tractors, mowers, edgers, trimmers, and other equipment to install and/or maintain lawns, grasslands, slopes, wetlands, and drainage ditches and to repair soil erosion
- Performs preventive maintenance and repair for landscaping features and fixtures
- Reports damaged and deteriorated building features, fixtures and furnishings and grounds and landscape features requiring repair or replacement by skilled workers to supervisor
- Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures and practices
- Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Affinity for the mission and values of John Ball Zoo
- Ability to interact positively with a wide array of individuals from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
- Working knowledge of landscape and grounds practices and procedures
- Operating knowledge of manual and small power tools commonly used in grounds and horticultural work
- Ability to gather and analyze data as related to use or troubleshooting of horticultural machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Ability to operate a variety of electric and gas-powered lawnmowers and other power-driven grounds maintenance equipment
- Ability to work independently as necessary and to prioritize and show flexibility with daily responsibilities with minimal guidance
- Flexing work hours may be needed periodically throughout the year
- Must be able and available to regularly work evenings, weekends and/or holidays
