Lead HVAC Engineer
The Lead HVAC Engineer ensures the Zoo’s heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems are maintained and operated in a safe and efficient manner, within standards established by manufacturer and/or installer.
Essential functions:
- Provides work direction to HVAC Engineers, as assigned.
- Directs and assists with heating, ventilation and air conditioning work as assigned.
- Helps supervise, operates, and maintains stationary engines and mechanical equipment such as low-pressure boilers, furnaces, water heaters and air conditioning components.
- Reads, interprets and records data from meters and gauges and adjusts controls of equipment to ensure peak efficiency of operation.
- Performs and directs preventive maintenance on equipment on a scheduled basis including greasing, water treatment, changing filters, etc.
- Assigns and carries out duties and responsibilities in safe and efficient manner to maintain safe work environment and surrounding area. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action, and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
- Performs and helps supervise chemical tests to determine the need for water treatment in boilers, cooling towers and closed-loop water heat systems.
- Performs complex mechanical and electrical repairs of machines and equipment. Coordinates contractor repairs, as necessary.
- Responsible for procuring pricing on repair and replacement parts required for the performance of duties.
- Gives assistance in analyzing problems with mechanical equipment and recommends solutions for repair or replacement.
- Supervises and makes purchases of repair parts and equipment. Assists with bid preparation for equipment related to the HVAC field.
- Maintains computer base of Zoo’s inventory of HVAC equipment.
- Meets frequently with Zoo Manager of Buildings and Facilities to discuss crew’s progress in different projects.
- Monitors, troubleshoots the Metasys Building Automation System.
- Performs electrical, plumbing and other skilled trade work, as assigned.
- Installs HVAC and related equipment when directed.
- Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain safe work environment and surrounding area. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action, and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
- Responds to fire systems in the Zoo related to HVAC equipment and buildings, as directed
- Keeps supervisor informed of key issues.
- Completes other tasks as assigned or as apparent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two year trade degree/diploma.
- Valid Ohio driver’s license.
- Possess steam operator’s license required; 3rd class preferred.
- CFC Universal Refrigerant License
- Minimum 5 years experience as an active HVAC engineer
- Capable of directing maintenance and repairs to boilers, furnaces and air conditioning units, chillers and cooling towers.
- Able to work in a cooperative manner with both supervisors and peers, seeking innovative and practical solutions.
- Basic computer skills.
- Possesses and maintains State of Ohio HVAC contractor’s license.
SHIFT: Wednesday – Saturday; 6:00 am – 4:30 pm
DAYS OFF: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
