Lead Mechanic

SUMMARY: The Lead Mechanic will perform preventative maintenance and repairs on the Saint Louis Zoo fleet consisting of golf carts, utility task vehicles, full-size vehicles, small engine equipment, heavy equipment and trailers.  As an active member in the Facilities Management Division, this position will support the Zoo’s mission and advocate the Zoo’s core values and three keys.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following reflects Management’s definition of essential functions for this position but does not restrict additional assigned tasks.  Management may assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position.

  • Perform basic routine maintenance tasks including but not limited to oil changes, tire rotations, fluid levels checks, transmission flushes, battery installations, headlight/taillight installations and inspections.
  • Repair or replace worn parts and systems such as spark plugs, wheel bearings, brake pads, fuel systems, sensors, filters, hoses and belts.
  • Conduct routine diagnostic analyses to check and test vehicle parts, systems and equipment using standard diagnostic and testing instruments.
  • Operate automotive vehicles and equipment to observe, check and assess malfunctions and repairs, conduct test runs, or otherwise transport vehicles and equipment for service or contracted repair.
  • Ensure vehicles are inspected according to the state’s requirements for emissions and safety.
  • Utilize the CMMS work order system for work scheduling, preventative maintenance programs and record keeping.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current industry best practices in automotive repair.
  • Clean and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.
  • Serve as the point-person for all automotive issues in the manager’s absence.
  • Assist the manager with daily records including but not limited to work orders, purchase orders, email or contractor correspondence and other documents as needed.
  • Ensure that proper safety guidelines and usage of PPE are followed at all times.
  • Know and understand the Zoo employee handbook and adhere to all stated disciplinary actions and personnel policies.
  • Work in close collaboration with all Zoo internal departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the manager with the daily oversight of the department’s skilled trade personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum five years of proven experience as an automotive mechanic required.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems, mechanical, electrical and electronic components required.
  • Possession or the ability to obtain OSHA 10/30-Hour Training certification.
  • Commitment to excellence and high standards.
  • Good attendance record and work ethic.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities and workflow with enthusiasm.
  • Possession or the ability to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver’s License is required for residents of Missouri.
  • All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal background check and drug test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to push, pull, bend, squat, stoop, and twist many times a day.
  • Must be able to safely lift, carry and load 50 pounds.
  • Physical capacity to endure exposure to inclement weather, dust, heavy machinery, restraint devices and hazardous chemicals. Use of proper PPE may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position will work in both a shop environment and outside. Significant exposure to weather is possible.
