Position: Life Support & Water Quality Technician

Reports to: Aquarium Manager

Status: Part-time Non-exempt

Position Summary:

The San Antonio Zoo is seeking 2 part-time Life Support & Water Quality Technicians to join their new Life Support Division in the Zoo’s Aquarium Department.  The successful applicants will work in a rewarding team atmosphere with current LSS staff under the direction of the Zoo’s Aquarium Manager.  Responsibilities will include the daily monitoring of life support conditions and preventative maintenance of all water and filtration systems within animal and public areas including exhibits, features, and human swim zones.

These positions will work side by side in support and relief of the Division’s Senior Life Support & Water Quality Technician, and work an average of 30-32 hours/week.  Candidates must be able to work weekends, holidays, and potentially evenings as needed, and must be team orientated and solution minded.  Candidates must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions consistent with the south Texas climate.

Required General Department Duties:

-Daily operation of water distribution systems, water chemistry monitoring (testing/logging), and repair/maintenance of mechanical systems as necessary

-Perform installation, preventative maintenance, and repair tasks on aquatic LSS and related aquatic components

-Assist with repairs, installation, and maintenance of life support controls and monitoring systems to ensure proper operation and to prevent equipment failure

-Daily operation/maintenance of ozone generators, compressors, and associated peripheral equipment

-Pump maintenance and repair

-High rate sand filter operation and maintenance

-Maintain water quality logs and follow scheduled water quality testing and LSS maintenance

-Assist in design and creation of new or improved water features
