The hours for this position will be 7-3:30 pm with one weekend day.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FACILITIES MAINTENANCE I  AT JBZ
The Facilities Maintenance I provides semi-skilled labor required for the care, cleaning and general maintenance of park facilities, including buildings, fixtures and furnishings; grounds, walkways, parking lots, and landscape forms; and other physical features. This person will  performs preventive maintenance for mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems and components thereof, including, but not limited to, lubrication of moving mechanical parts, filter changes, and repair of ballasts in light fixtures.
This position is 1st shift 7am – 3:30pm. 
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A  FACILITIES MAINTENANCE I  
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, material safety data sheets and other safety information required for proper performance of the work.
  • Working knowledge of preventive maintenance practices for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems and components.
  • Operating knowledge of manual and small power tools commonly used in carpentry, maintenance construction, grounds, and custodial maintenance trades.
  • Ability to operate a variety of electric and gas-powered driven maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data as related to use of; or troubleshooting of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Sufficient mathematical ability to mix cleaning chemicals, and other compounds in proper proportions.
  • Ability to interact positively and appropriately with coworkers, supervisors, managers, Zoo guests, contractors, concessionaires, and members of the general public with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED combined with building and grounds maintenance experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to interact positively and appropriately with coworkers, supervisors, managers, Zoo patrons, contractors, concessionaires, and members of the general public with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Incumbent will work in various environments both inside and outside and may occasionally be exposed to inclement weather; pollen, mold, dust, dirt, and other airborne contaminants; and temperature variations.
  • While performing the essential functions of this position the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical hazards; noxious fumes; dust, dirt, animal dander, zoonotic pathogens, and other airborne particulates; blood borne pathogens; cleaning compounds; solvents; detergents; noise; and other hazards.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS 
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.   Ability to push, pull, raise and lower supplies and equipment weighing up to 80 lbs. several times per day with or without mechanical or other assistance.
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity with or without corrective lenses to visually assess the inspect exhibit and holding area structures, features, fixtures and equipment for damage or deterioration.
  • Must have sufficient auditory acuity with or without audio logical appliances to identify animal noises indicating distress, aggression, pain and other conditions and behaviors; to hear warning signals from exhibit and holding area safety and security systems; to detect sounds associated with malfunctions in mechanical equipment and systems; and to detect warning signals from maintenance and other vehicles and equipment operating within the Zoo.
  • Must possess sufficient manual dexterity, strength, and ability to rotate wrists, elbows and shoulders to operate manual cranks and pulleys controlling exhibit and holding area slide doors, and to use manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance of exhibits and holding facilities.
  • Must be able to descend to and ascend from a kneeling position several times per day in order to inspect, clean and maintain exhibit grounds, holding area flooring and structures, features, fixtures and equipment located at ground/floor level.
  • Must have sufficient mobility with or without assistive devices to access all areas of outdoor and indoor exhibits and holding areas in order to inspect grounds, plantings, structures, fixtures, features, furnishings, equipment and components thereof.
  • Must be able to work with safety harness and work with respirator.
