Rides Maintenance Manager

Definition:

Responsible for the general and preventative maintenance and inspection of all amusement rides, water rides and features, and attractions at the Columbus Zoological Park Association properties with primary focus on safety.

Essential Duties:

  • Directs and coordinates activities of Rides personnel engaged in the maintenance and repair of all amusement rides and attractions.
  • Reviews job orders to determine work priorities, then schedules those orders to effect greatest utilization of labor and materials.
  • Provides necessary follow-up with personnel to ensure that jobs have been successfully completed.
  • Plans, develops and implements new methods and procedures designed to improve operations and minimize operating costs.
  • Develops and implements preventative maintenance programs based on the manufacturer’s requirements and best practices for all amusement rides, water rides and features, and attractions.

  • Ensures that all rides maintenance personnel have read and understand the maintenance and operation manuals provided by the ride manufacturers.
  • Ensures that the required annual maintenance and testing of all rides and attractions is performed by qualified personnel and records of those activities are retained in the equipment logs.
  • Maintains appropriate parts inventory.
  • Expresses sense of urgency with manufacturers and does everything possible to eliminate down time of rides during operating season.
  • Organizes and coordinates Ohio Department of Agriculture Amusement Ride Safety Division inspections for annual license renewal.
  • Ensures that during operation, daily safety inspections are performed and recorded and routine daily, weekly, monthly required/recommended maintenance schedules are completed and retained in the equipment logs.
  • Ensures that manufacturers’ maintenance and repair bulletins are implemented in a timely fashion and retained in the equipment logs.
  • Prepares and conducts performance reviews, provides safety and equipment training and identifies development opportunities for staff, recommends corrective actions when appropriate and interviews/recommends candidates for hire and/or internal promotion or transfer.
  • Prepares work schedules for Rides Maintenance personnel.
  • Identifies and secures necessary tools, equipment and supplies required for staff to operate efficiently and effectively.
  • Works with Purchasing to ensure that adequate supplies are on hand at all times using the most cost effective methods available.
  • Maintains an accurate records system of newly submitted and completed requisition forms and equipment documents.
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with the other Facilities staff in order to ensure the effective operation of the entire Facilities and Operations Departments.
  • If applicable, monitors and distributes chemical supply products and follows standardized usage guidelines and safety information as set by the Safety Data Sheets
  • Ensures safety of self, staff, animals and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities; compliance with standard operating procedures; and proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Attends daily/weekly meetings as required.
  • Participates in cross-training activities as directed.
  • Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and The Wilds.
  • Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical school graduate in related field preferred; Undergraduate degree in related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of general maintenance experience required.
  • 1-3 years of supervisory experience required. 3-5 years of experience is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of amusement rides, water rides and attractions preferred.
  • Must have read, understand and be familiar with “Laws and Rules Governing Amusement Rides in Ohio” published by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Amusement Ride Safety Division and ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations and codes and to safeguard the general public.
  • UV Sanitation experience preferred.
  • Licensure by NAARSO and/or AIMS as a certified ride inspector required.
  • Licensure by CPO and/or AFO as a certified pool operator required pursuant to work assignment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with ride manufacturer representatives and Ohio Department of Agriculture amusement ride inspectors and representatives.
  • Possession of a forklift certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in maintenance and construction work and knowledge of building materials and supplies required.
  • Ability to plan work schedules and to deal effectively with supervisors and subordinates required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Ability to work at least one day out of each weekend required in-season (May through mid-September).
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
  • Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license and a good driving record required.
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Ability to adhere to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s drug-free workplace policy including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and follow-up treatment required.
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
