Essential Job Functions

Responsible for the leadership and management of the Facilities, Grounds, and Construction Departments in a way that ensures a healthy, positive work environment. Responsible for the maintenance, appearance, and safety of ZNE facilities, grounds, and exhibits. Responsible for all aspects of new construction including issuing RFPs, bidding, and oversight of all contracts utilizing best management practices that ensure meeting of deadlines and maximizing value of capital investments.  This position is also responsible for development, planning, and implementation of the capital program including exhibits, building asset management, and capital equipment acquisition. Duties include the development, implementation, and ongoing development of departmental budgets and staffing. The Senior Director of Construction, Facilities, and Grounds participates collaboratively with other functional Divisions in support of Zoo New England’s mission and strategic plan.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Supervises/manages human and financial resources associated with the operation of the Facilities, Grounds, and Construction Departments.
  2. Implements and monitors preventative maintenance programs.
  3. Develops and oversees Departmental and Capital budgets.
  4. Analyzes and interprets financial information and reports in a timely manner.
  5. Prepares and maintains thorough records.
  6. Creates and supports opportunities for departmental staff members’ professional development.
  7. Communicates with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, codes, and legal requirements.
  8. Develops and oversees near and long term plans supporting ZNE’s Master Plan and Strategic Plan.
  9. Responsible for developing design, retaining professional services, and construction of exhibits and other capital asset development.
  10. Establishes and implements Departmental and staff performance goals that support the organization’s mission and Strategic Plan.
  11. This position is expected to share on-call duties and be willing to work weekends and some holidays.
  12. Participates and instructs other staff in Dangerous Animal Response Protocols and the Incident Command System.
  13. Ensures all contractors comply with ZNE’s Contractor Code of Conduct.
  14. Responsible for quality control on all ZNE projects both self-performed and contracted.
  15. Ensures staff and contractors are following all SOP’s, safety protocols, and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment.
  16. Fostering the understanding of, and ensuring staff follow-through on proper maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds and exhibits to positively impact the guest experience.
  17. Interfaces with and functions as a team member with all other departments to ensure coordination, cooperation and synergies.
  18. Provides input, assistance, and oversees personnel matters within the Department. Ensures all departmental staff management is conducted in compliance with all legal/regulatory requirements and ZNE policies and procedures.
  19. Plans, coordinates, and assists in a variety of procedures related to the proper function of the Department.
  20. Directs and coordinates Curators, Director of Animal Resources, and Registrar in developing and effecting policies, programs, and procedures.
  21. Develops proficiency with the Incident Command System, and ensures departmental readiness for emergency response.
  22. Ensures compliance with all Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
  23. Supports, practices, and enforces ZNE’s sustainability policies and procedures.
  24. Ensures positive staff interactions with guests in support of ZNE’s Strategic Plan.
  25. Performs related work as required.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure and close contact with a variety of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects.
  • Frequently need to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and lift.
  • Frequent requirements to move moderate to heavy objects.
  • Work in uneven terrain with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, and allergens.
  • Move about on slippery surfaces.
  • Handle toxic and/or hazardous materials.
  • Work in confined or cramped spaces.
  • May work from an elevated position.
  • Must be willing and able to take lead role as supervisor during emergencies; and cope with high stress situations, e.g., the recapture of escaped animals or emergency assistance to guests as directed.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Understanding of building and construction processes, systems, codes, regulations and laws.
  • Ten years progressive management experience in construction management, facilities management, and grounds management.
  • Possesses and conveys great enthusiasm for the organizational mission, Strategic Plan, and the Master Plan.
  • TB tested negative before starting and tested yearly thereafter.
  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license in good standing and be able to lawfully drive in Massachusetts.
  • Commitment to excellence, continuous improvement, creativity, innovation, and teamwork.
  • Must have strong leadership, organizational, communication skills, and be willing and able to participate effectively in a team management approach.
  • Must be able to provide clear direction, communication and sound judgement in routine and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to understand, implement, and maintain AZA accreditation standards.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Construction management from an accredited college or university.
  • Extensive experience with development of exhibits and related capital project management.
  • Advanced degree(s) in related field
  • Ability to obtain a Commonwealth of Massachusetts firearms permit within 9 months from date of hire.
  • Experience as an AZA inspector.
