Senior Director of Facilities and Construction

If you are a proven leader that has a knack for thinking outside the box and a passion for spearheading challenging infrastructure and construction projects to completion, look no further, your career is at the Indianapolis Zoo!  The primary focus of the Senior Director of Facilities and Construction is to provide overall management and coordination of facilities, physical asset maintenance, and construction projects.  This position is responsible for aligning the physical plant with the Zoo’s strategic plan and business strategy. The successful candidate will serve as one of the Zoo’s senior spokespersons on issues related to physical plant and construction.

The Senior Director of Facilities and Construction is a full-time, 40 hours per week, position that is an integral position to the Zoo’s facility and construction operations.  This position will oversee and support continuous improvement of environmental sustainability, develop, implement, and manage the operating asset management program, and focus on preventive maintenance as well as repair and replacement.  Prior supervisory experience is vital as this role will oversee the Facilities Department including our Facilities, Trades, Warehouse, Life Support, Maintenance, and Building Automation & Energy Management teams.

The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world.   To have success in this role, the individual must have at least five (5) years of experience with commercial construction in increasingly responsible positions as well as at least five (5) years of project management on several large commercial or institutional projects. A communicative personality is essential to work in conjunction with our Safety and Security departments to assure that department personnel and contractors, sub-contractors and material suppliers comply with all relevant Zoo policies and procedures, including sexual harassment, drug-free workplace, OSHA standards, fire, inclement weather, and animal escapes. This position will primarily work Monday through Friday, but some weekends and evening hours may apply due to project deadlines.

Responsibilities and Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Must be well versed in all aspects of the construction management process: pre-construction, construction, and project close-out.
  • Proven background in managing external providers/ vendors in construction of large-scale commercial projects.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership in the articulation of operational and design strategies.
  • When assigned by senior management, will oversee all construction processes including design, mobilization, due diligence, and quality control processes, estimating, purchasing, submittals, scheduling, project logs, and construction close-out.
  • Coordinates all construction-related activities that impact Zoo operations including but not limited to utility shut offs, walk or road closures, animal procedures, and donor tours.
  • Works in conjunction with the SVP and CFO to manage the purchasing process in support of construction and facilities management.
  • Ensures compliance with all appropriate Federal, State, and Local laws, building and safety codes.
  • Represents the Zoo at activities and programs where the Zoo’s interest is served.
  • Demonstrates continued and advancing interest in and knowledge of the fields of Construction, Facilities Maintenance, and Building and Energy Management.
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a telephone and two-way radio.
  • Due to working primarily with computers, this system will be exposed to repetitive motion.
  • Position requires the ability to move from one area to another frequently.
  • Must have the ability to develop long-term, “big picture” strategies for large scale public facilities.
  • Familiarity with various types of building systems including, but not limited to, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Must have a valid Indiana driver’s license (or obtain one within 30 days or hire) and be insurable by the Indianapolis Zoological Society, Inc.’s insurance company.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Construction Management, Engineering or a related field is required, Master’s Level degree in Engineering or equivalent is preferred.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment testing including a criminal history and driving record check, and a drug test.
